From our family to yours

We’re proud to finally share The Salty Greek – our Signature Blend is a carefully balanced mix of dried herbs and spices to capture the taste of the Mediterranean, based on a recipe that has been passed across generations and continents.

Our family heritage is from Lefkada, an island in the Ionian sea, but we’ve called Australia home for a few generations. Over a decade ago, Marinos (aka pappou) passed on his knowledge to his sons on how to craft his signature lamb on the spit, including his secret herb and spice blend that he had learnt from his family in Greece.

As a family who loves to entertain and experiment with food, Theo, his wife Tania, and their daughters would host work events, parties, and dinners, using this signature blend – and always get questions about their flavours, from Theo’s mouth watering lamb to Tania’s “I can’t believe it’s vegan" dishes (ever heard of a Greek vegan?!).

Staying connected during tough times

Due to the pandemic, it’s been harder – and sometimes impossible – to entertain and connect with groups of friends and family the way we’re used to. They would ask us for our herb blend to cook with at home, and this is where the idea was really sparked. With great feedback, and some more time on our hands, The Salty Greek was born with the mission to express our culture and foods we love sharing so we can stay connected.

With people spending more time in the kitchen and learning about ways to support their wellbeing through their diet, it become clear to us how important it is to easily achieve flavourful food with natural ingredients.

Making it a reality

However, in classic Greek fashion, the recipe to this family blend was never written down. Thus began the process of reverse engineering the recipe – we knew the ingredients but not the quantities, and had a small sample of the original blend to reference.

For months, our house was filled with bags of herbs and spices, containers of batch experiments, and notebooks filled with recipe notes. We shared different blends with family who had tasted the original, until we finally found the magic mix. We continue to discover new ways to use it!

It’s been quite a journey and a true family collaboration – all coming together to work on production, photography, taste testing, branding to now launching the website.

Our mission

The Salty Greek family would like to connect with every household to experience the flavours of this Mediterranean blend, sharing our culture and values through cooking. We look forward to sharing our adventures in the kitchen – modern ideas inspired by our family heritage.
