We love lemons 🍋

Growing our lemon tree was the best decision yet!

Lemons are a powerhouse ingredient that add flavour, nutrition and so many health benefits to our diets! As Greeks, this is one of our “Holy Trinitys” of cooking (alongside olive oil and oregano, although we’ve swapped out the oregano for The Salty Greek). Many cultures around the world love lemons too, and it’s one of the most accessible and simple ways to brighten up any dish.

🍋 A little lemon goes a long way

No lemons go to waste our household. How many of these do you do?:

• Zest

  Peel large slivers or finely microplane – whether you keep it fresh or leave it to dry, the zest has so much flavour and aroma, being a perfect garnish to infuse

• Juice

  Squeeze and freeze is our go to, giving us fresh lemon all year round. Aside from using in everyday cooking (dressings, marinades, sauces, sweet or savoury, squeezed on everything and anything), it’s also great to prevent fruit and veg (like apples or potatoes) from browning over time

• Dehydrate

  Thinly sliced, you can use a dehydrator or low-temp oven to dry them out, making the perfect garnish for drinks: water, teas, cocktails

• Leaves

  Just like Bay Leaves or Kafir Lime Leaves add flavour to your soup broths and marinades, lemon leaves do exactly that too, especially when wrapped around foods before grilling. The leaves also make great decoration

🍋 Lime + lemon = limon?

Our Pappou Marino is an expert in grafting trees. Standing proudly in his backyard is a lemon tree grafted with lime – we find it amusing because they look like yellow lemons with a very smooth lime skin but when you cut them open, they are green in color and taste like a sweeter version of lemon with a fragrance of lime - that’s skill right there.

🍋 Limoncello or Limon-hell no

There was this one time I attempted to make Limoncello. After weeks of letting it sit, we were so excited to try it… let’s just say that it would have been more pleasant to drink Windex… it ended up being repurposed as a natural cleaner 🤧 I would like to forget this memory actually. Hmm… A little something like this video
