Hey Subscriber First Name, are you a Winter person? In our family, some of us love it and some don’t–I happen to be the former and love the cold! It’s the perfect excuse to snuggle up in layers of soft sweaters, fluffy scarves, warm hats and gloves. The fresh chill in the air awakens the senses.

Winter food is all about warmth, comfort, and rich flavours. With the nights becoming darker sooner, it’s the best time to sip on hot chocolate or spiced cider. Gather your friends or family for a night in with some board games, or venture out to a local market on the weekend.

Did You Know? 🧐

By soaking garlic in water for at least half an hour (or more if you can), it can soften the texture making it easier to peel. Plus, these other benefits:
🧄 Easier to mince or dice finely
🧄 Removes dirt
🧄 Reduces bitterness
🧄 Soaking before planting can help garlic to sprout quicker as it softens the outer layer

Winter veggies are a well loved seasonal staple, but did you know that citrus is now in season too? Our mandarin and orange trees are taking off–I went to take a photo to show you, and I accidentally did ‘take off’ one! It was delicious by the way. Plus, citrus have the vitamins and antioxidants we need to help keep us healthy this season. Even more reason to love them.

Chicken & Leek Pie

As the weather gets cooler, hearty pasties and pies provide warmth and comfort. They are perfect to throw together during the week to use up the ingredients in the fridge.

Over the past two editions of the newsletter, I’ve been trialling the free app Saveful. It’s been a great source of inspiration for resourceful cooking that uses ingredients you already have. The verdict is in: it’s a keeper for sure!

We also discovered that this was made by an SA company and supported by the SA Government–love to see Aussie innovation!

Kids in the Kitchen

It is very important to get kids interested and involved in the kitchen as young as possible for a hands on interest in cooking. Our daughters would take it in turns weekly–whether they were baking cupcakes, or cookies they would make as big as the size of a plate! I still have the ‘Delicious Cupcakes’ book (pictured above) the girls baked from. 🥹 Here are tips for keeping them engaged:

🧑‍🍳 Make an activity to create ‘art on a plate’ like arranging patterns with pizza toppings, playful fruit kebabs
🧑‍🍳 Begin with easy recipes, like cookies or salads, or techniques, like washing vegetables and stirring ingredients
🧑‍🍳 Involve them in the planning of the weekly meals to get them excited about what they will eat
🧑‍🍳 Make an game of taste testing ingredients (like they do in MasterChef); this could be blindfolded or not
🧑‍🍳 Create a cooking calendar (print off one month at a time) and plan a cooking day together each week
